If you're looking for a golf league to join, use our CT Playing Partners Message Board. Please, no commerical postings. Wednesday, September 09, 2009 at 15:08:25 (EDT) Jon Bertino, Broomfield, CO | Email Will be in the Old Saybrook area from Sept. 14-25. Looking for nearby courses to play within a reasonable drive (40 minutes). Any suggestions? Thanks. Tuesday, July 07, 2009 at 08:19:44 (EDT) Joe Rotella, Waterbury, CT | Email A group of us have been running a scholarship golf tournament for a buddy of ours who passed away over 6 years ago. We moved this tournament to Hawk's Landing in Southington in 2006 and could not be happier with the results. Dave Rustico, John Vitale and their staff do an absolutely amazing job. The facilities at Hawk's Landing are top-notch and the new pavilion they have built is unbelievable. This year the weather was a bit uncooperative but the course held up really well and things went extremely smooth. We had a full field of golfers (144) and I attribute part of that to the venue that is provided to us at Hawk's Landing. I highly recommend having an outing or just playing a round there. Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 16:24:39 (EDT) Michael Kopp, East Hartford, CT | Email Want to play a course that has a chance to make you improve your game? Try Topstone GC in South Windsor. This course put bunkering in and around their greens, not to punish but to force elevated iron shots. After playing this course many times, it has made other layouts much easier. It's in great shape and it won't kill your wallet. Tuesday, June 09, 2009 at 07:14:11 (EDT) Derrick Lindley, Wallingford, CT | Email I have been playing the Tradition at Wallingford for the last month, and I have to say, they are doing all the right things. The staff there is great (love the bag drop), the food is awesome and the course is in better shape than any of the surrounding public courses. It is nice to see courses putting money into their clubs to make them better. I hope other courses in the area take notice. The Tradition has it going in the right direction! Monday, May 25, 2009 at 14:01:30 (EDT) Tim Newman, Shelton, CT | Email I just played the Jones Course at Lyman Orchards GC this weekend. They just renovated all the bunkers, did tons of drainage and replaced the irrigation system. I recommend everyone to get out there. The changes really are dramatic and look awesome! Still healing a little bit, and the front has some work still being done, but it really looks good. Friday, May 22, 2009 at 22:43:39 (EDT) Tyrone Gibson, Groton, CT | Email Would you recommend this club? Sunday, April 26, 2009 at 08:31:32 (EDT) Bill Sorenson, Wallingford, CT | Email Played both Laurel View CC and Tradition GC at Wallingford this week. I have to say, the Tradition is doing all of the right things. The golf course is immaculate, the price is a steal and the food is to die for. Other clubs in the area should take note. The Tradition makes you feel welcome from the second you pull into the driveway. Friday, April 24, 2009 at 14:18:52 (EDT) George Roberge, Groton, CT | Email Hawk's Landing CC in Southington in mid-summer shape. Greens are perfect, fairways can be played down. Bob Silva, as usual, has performed his spring miracles. Thursday, April 09, 2009 at 10:36:07 (EDT) Eric Morrison, Groton, CT | Email Shennecossett GC in Groton, just across the river from New London, near the water. Very walkable. There is a feature story on the course on the home page. Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 08:59:37 (EDT) Doug Davis, Luray, VA | Email Virginia couple looking for a coastal area course between New London and RI to play this July. Prefer somewhat level to facilitate walking. Thanks for your help. Monday, April 06, 2009 at 17:18:31 (EDT) Pasquale Ricciardone, Vernon, CT | Email Tried to play Tradition GC in Windsor. Refund given after 1st hole. Course unplayable -- soaked and badly maintained due to last year's unsuccessful selling of the course. But they plan to keep it up and running and make major improvements. I hope. The course has a great layout and is fun to play. Minnechaug GC in Glastonbury is getting real nice as the weeks go on. A tough, tight course. Also, just joined the men's club there. Real nice program set up. Friday, April 03, 2009 at 19:07:48 (EDT) Alex Flynn, Wethersfield, CT | Email I know a course in CT that is great for starting off the new golf season: Willow Brook GC in South Windsor. It is only a par-60, but you use almost every club in the bag, and it is a beautiful course. Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 06:47:55 (EDT) John Kuckens, West Hartford, CT | Email Is there a more challenging collection of par-3s than are found at Tower Ridge CC in Simsbury? On only one can a short iron be used from the tee, and that is to a severely sloping putting surface. The other three require long irons or hybrids to reach a green that is hidden, beyond water, or uphill. Monday, March 09, 2009 at 13:02:55 (EDT) Ed Guertin, Cranston, RI | Email The best in RI is Newport National. A little pricy and on the east side of the state, this course is way above the other public plays in RI. As far as the west side of the state close to CT that are reasonable and good plays, I like Beaver River and Laurel Lanes (Route 138), Fenner Hill and Richmond (I-95, Exit 2). They all have good food, too. Monday, February 23, 2009 at 12:36:24 (EST) Victor Waldman, Milford, CT | Email Hi, Ed, thanks for responding. What are your favorites in RI? Any close to CT, and reasonably priced? Sunday, February 08, 2009 at 19:24:17 (EST) Ed Guertin, Cranston, RI | Email Vic, I went down and was really disappointed in the conditions of the greens on the Player Course at Lyman Orchards. It is a great layout, and hopefully, with the additional improvements, they concentrate on the greens. That would put them right up there. Monday, February 02, 2009 at 12:30:07 (EST) Victor Waldman, Milford, CT | Email I'd have to add Shennecossett GC, Wintonberry Hills GC and Lyman Orchards GC (Player Course) to my top 10. But they are all excellent choices. Friday, January 16, 2009 at 15:01:45 (EST) Ed Guertin, Cranston, RI | Email I like your picks, Del, but I would need to add three to the must-play list: Lakes of Isles GC (it is what you read about), Fox Hopyard gC and Richter Park GC. I also enjoyed the elevation challenges at Quarry Ridge GC. Monday, January 05, 2009 at 21:34:33 (EST) Del Weston, Meriden, CT | Email Having played every 18-hole public course in the state except Lake of Isles GC, here is my list of Top 10 layouts in CT: Great River GC, H. Smith Richardson GC, Wintonbury Hills GC, GC at Oxford Greens, Fairview Farms GC, River Ridge GC, Tashua Knolls GC, Cedar Knob GC, Rockledge GC and Elmridge GC (Blue and White nines). The first five are all "must-play" courses. The best courses do have faults, but even the worst-ranked course in the state has something notable about it. I invite other golfers to nominate their favorites. Home |
