BOROS Lance R. Boros, age 53 of the Huntington section of Shelton, the beloved husband of Lisa Fern-Boros, who lived a life full of love and laughter that ended too soon, died Thursday, February 24, 2011. Lance was known for many passions, chief among them family, friends, travel, cooking and especially time spent with loved ones on the golf course. Born April 9, 1957 in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Lance Boros Jr. and Madeline Soda Boros, and was raised in Stratford. He graduated from Bunnell High School in 1975, and went on to earn an associate's degree in business at Housatonic Community College and a culinary arts degree at the Connecticut Culinary Institute. He was a configuration engineer, working more than 13 years at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford. Prior to that, he worked for Avco Lycoming in Stratford for 13 years and was briefly a chef at the 19th Hole Restaurant in Bridgeport. Lance's father, a Fairfield native, was an accomplished amateur golfer, and his uncles were the noted professional golfers, Ernest and Julius Boros, two-time winner of the United States Open. He began playing golf as a teenager shortly after his parents died, and discovered an affinity for the sport that eventually would take him to some of the greatest golf courses in the world, among them the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. A special highlight was caddying for his cousin, Julius' and golf professional, Guy Boros at the Greater Hartford Open and for his wife in local and USGA events. He was a member of the Highland Golf Club of Shelton, where he formerly served on the Board of Governors. Lance will be cherished by all who love him for his smile and laughter that would light up a room, as they did many a fairway, and for his kindness, generosity and eagerness to help others. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a sister, Phyllis A.S. Boros, and her husband, David W. Keyes of Bridgeport; aunts, Rose Cella of Stratford, Irene Tuba of Fairfield, Elizabeth Hermann of Westminster, Calif., and Armen Boros of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; an uncle, Ernest Boros of Plantation, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Marguerite Fern; a sister-in-law, Cynthia Fern-King; and three nieces, Hilary and Ashley King, and Lisa M. Keyes, all of Massachusetts, as well as many cousins. Friends are invited to meet directly in St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton, on Monday, February 28, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lisa Fern-Boros through the funeral home for a memorial fund to be set up in Lance's name at the Highland Golf Club. Was Phil Right?

By Sue Sawyer on February 17, 2011 11:35 AM | Comments (0)

No, not Phil Mickleson but that pesky little groundhog who predicts spring.  I'm sure hoping he's right because like me, I'm sure you are really sick of all this snow we've received this winter.

The past couple of weeks of warmer temps has seen my four foot piles of snow dwindle down to about two feet and areas around the house are now showing the earth again.  But the best sign that spring is on the way - my daffodils have popped through the ground and are showing their little yellow buds.

So what to do while we wait for the rest of this snow to melt.

1. Pull out your golf bag and clean it out if you didn't do it at the end of the year. A word of warning - if you store your clubs in a garage or shed and leave things like crackers in your bag when you put it away, they may be gone when you check in spring.  The telltale sign is that little hole in your bag pocket donated by a very thankful and hungry mouse.

2. Check your clubs.  If you haven't had your grips changed in the last year and they appear slick or worn, get them replaced.  Pre-season downtime is the best time to get them done while you wait.

3. Check out your gloves and toss any that are badly soiled or have tears in them.

4. Pull out your shoes and see if you need new spikes.  If you're not up to changing your own, bring the shoes along when you get the grips done and ask the pro to change them for you.

The last thing you want is to have a club go flying out of your hand because they are slick or slip on a hill or wet grass because your spikes are worn down.  A little preventative maintenance goes a long way.

Your game will thank you.

Also, this year SNEWGA is hosting a new tournament - a Member/Guest - which will be held at Cedar Knob Golf Course on Tuesday, June 7th.  So if you've heard about SNEWGA and know ladies who are already members and would like to see what all the fuss is about come as a guest.  You won't be disappointed.

For more information about SNEWGA, their tournament schedule, and how to become a member check out www.snewga.org.
